MissPug+Chooks
Hello, Another limping chicken here! Pickle one of my was seriously limping this morning; she wouldn't come out of the eglu. We have brought her in and she is in a dog cage at the mo lined with newspaper and straw and shallow dishes for food and water. She is doing ok, she is eating and drinking but not moving much (using her wing to balance / weigh bear) . I am going to keep her in to rest for a few days as I can't find any visible points of injury and she hasn't broken it. However I now have a problem with my other 'Ginger' as she is out in the eglu and run on her own and she is NOT happy! The dog cage is too big to go inside the run and I can't put Pickle back in with Ginger as she can't eat or drink. They were free ranging yesterday so I wander if our cat had a pop at them Any advice for either hen would be much appreciated. Pickle seems to be enjoying the 'high life' and is sleeping away on her bed of straw in the conservatory....I am now worried about poor little Ginger! Many Thanks is advance for your help. MissPug+Chooks
Incase anyone was wandering - or if anyone has a similar problem in the future.... Turns out Pickle ahd been attacked she has puncture wounds at the very top of her leg - no wander she wasn't putting any weight on it!! Took her to the vets and felt like an idiot, but the vet had dealt with chickens in the past - she had a jab of antibiotics (£18) and he said to bring her back in 2 days for the next jab to see how she does. The vet said she was in VERY good condition otherwise and can see no reason as to why she wouldn't pull through as long as she keeps eating and drinking. So fingers crossed! x
Egluntyne
Am glad you have solved they mystery. Why not put the dog crate outside next to or inside the run, suitably protected from the weather, so that her and the other hen can still see and hear each other, to prevent squabbles when you put her back. MissPug+Chooks
Thanks for that Egluntyne! Today I put Pickle back in with Ginger for the day and they got on famously thank god! Ginger dug out a little hole next to Pickle and they sat next to each other all day! Pickle is back inside with all of her food and water and is pecking away quite happily! Fingers crossed she just has soft tissue damage! Although Pickle still isn't moving around, she seems better all ready - second antibiotic jab tomorrow and she is shuffling aroud a bit! Don't think they will be free ranging unsupervised anymore - I feel so awful for letting Pickle get injured, can't do it again! I shall keep you updated! x
Chucky Mama
Glad to hear that you have got to the bottom of things. It would be a good idea to enforce rest - have food and water close by to restrict the amount that she has to walk. The more that she rests the quicker she will get better. MissPug+Chooks
Went to the vet this morning and she tried pecking him quite angrily so she is feeling a lot better! Managed to see the wound properly today - poor this has a whole right through the top of her leg and you can see tendons etc! No wander she doesn't want to walk much! She is much perkier today so I am confident that she will make a full recovery, I put some sweetcorn in her cage this evening - just far enough that she had to make an effort to reach it and she managed to shuffle forwards to get it so she must have a fighting spirit Another antibiotics jab on Sunday and hopefully that will be her lot Fingers crossed!! MissPug+Chooks
Just a quick update on Pickle - she got injured early October where she received a leg injury from a cat. Now we are middle of November and she is still hopping around but she went from looking very ill, pale comb, not attempting to eat and drink to hopping around being the first to come out in the morning, eats loads very vocal and still joins in the fun when free ranging. As for her leg, she is still holding up very high but it using it to shift her weight when she hops around and is slowly lowering it, I'm hoping after xmas she'll start using it and will be ok! Wasn't sure if it was the best to keep her alive with one leg but as she is eating, hopping, laying and generally happy and perky I think it was the right decision as long as she carries on the way I will be happy
