Meat Labelling

Recommended Posts

Hi

Me again. Have just written my first letter to one Supermarket Tesco asking them to label meat products accordingly if any religious method is involved. I dont think they have any plans to label unless enought people speak up(but I could be incorrect).

The last time I spotted any special meat was in Finchley Sainsburys in a Kosher section(I dont know if its still their) :?:

Am sending it to their head office addresss Tesco Head Office, New Tesco House, Delamare Road, Cheshunt, Herts. EN8 9SL(I hope this is the right address as it appears they wont respond to emails)?

Will feed back any outcome or response.

Donald

ps They have just announced profits of £1.18 billion so am sure they can afford to make a small change.

I saw an article on the television last week that showed and explained that the huge amount of meat in our shops, that is prepared according to Halal principles, is partly a compromise. It opens up markets around the world and avoids waste, especially for industries like New Zealand lamb. I think they said 75% of NZ lamb is Halal, but I'd need to check that.

The creature is stunned and then the butcher who has to be a Muslim says a prayer and then dispatches the creature according to Muslim practice. The man watching this who was, I think, a butcher checked the creature and said he was confident that it suffered no distress.

However, he felt and I agree, that customers should still be informed. The official line was that if the creature suffered no distress then we didn't need to know, although I might have got that wrong as I wasn't fully paying attention.

I think this raises another question though - if all the butchers have to be Muslim wouldn't that involve prejudice against anyone applying for that job who wasn't, and I thought religion wasn't supposed to be part of recruitment because of our equality laws.

I think there's a lot of people being 'economical with the truth' in this whole issue.

Yes absolutely as long as its humane. I did see the programme and it was a very well run slaughter house. But I am sure they are not all this good. One of the criticisms was ie chickens it would slow down the whole process for each chicken to have a prayer said to it. I imagine lamb will take longer etc to deal with.

I am not religious but think that people should know(ie if they are) that this is what happens ie Labelling.

Also agree the meat industry would end up being very bias / dominated if only Muslims could be allowed to slaughter ie the prayer bit in this way, as non muslims cannot do this bit.

Keep thinking I should become vegetarian again.

Morrisons fresh meat lamb is non halal but the frozen isnt. Not sure who caters for who.
