Sooo much pooping

On the box of grit I bought it says to keep the grit dry, but if I mix it into their bedtime treat, such as mashed potato or warm porrige is that ok ?

Just my opinion but I'd say yes. I think its a bit like cornflakes - keep them dry until ....

No need to mix grit into their food. Put it in a pot and they will take all they need.

Thing is, when i put a dish in before they just filled it with dirt and then the rain got to it and they weren't that interested in it - so i thought if i sneaked it in they would at least get some.....I do worry about those shells that are not that hard. Any other suggestions as to get harder shells?

I don't think the grit makes shells hard. Isn't it so they can grind up their food? So they will take what they need. Before mine free ranged, I just threw some in the run every now and then. For shells to be hard you need calcium (I think) and can use ground up egg shells, but you're meant to bake them first so they don't realise they're egg shells, and then get a taste and start eating their own.

Mixed grit has oyster shell in it to provide calcium. I have a pot of mixed grit in run but tie it to the side of the run at a height dirt can't get kicked in. Its protected by run cover

Perhaps I could get them another grub container because I did buy them a little silver dish that clipped on the side but it just filled up with rain Blasted rain.

That dish would be ok just fix it where it is protected by the run cover from rain.
