What Central Heating Service Contractor do you use?

Recommended Posts

We are with British Gas too, and have been for a number of years. I havent looked at anyone elses mainly due to the fact that we have had a fair few breakdowns and thankfully everytime BG have sorted it out.

Only last weekend found a dripping unit in the airing cupboard next to the hot water tank.. and they came out first thing Mon morning and sorted it. Much to our relief.

Be interested to see who uses different company. xx

We use small local firm. Much cheaper, reliable, same day service if required, they also service the heating system yearly.

I always prefer using local companies when I can - I think you get a better service, cost less, and the people are more likely to care as it is either their company, or they are one of a small number of employees. I've not had a bad experience with BT in particular, but resent lining their pockets, when I could support a local business, for less money.

British Gas ... pay through the nose, but it includes the annual service and if something goes wrong then the repairs are free, and when my hot water tank split at 11.20 pm one night and water began pouring through the kitchen ceiling, it was great to know I could ring them up and someone would come out.

I think their customer service is poor generally, and my friend had something like 18 separate calls before they could fix her boiler, they had to get someone out from the boiler manufacturer in the end! However I stick with them - if I knew a local firm I might use them but I don't know anyone.

Thanks everyone.

We too dislike paying through the nose and also the monopoly that big companies can have.

BG have been reasonable in their practice but it costs us in excess of £20 pcm for the pleasure!

Our plumber is very good & will service our system & repair it. He charges £45 for the annual service, but he did mention that the silver valve box (which we have had renewed on each system since installation 8 years ago costs £150 approx to replace. This makes the safety of an annual insurance more attractive to keep.

Have found that both npower & eon do similar for slightly less outlay.

Has anyone any comments on either of these?
