bullying

Recommended Posts

a few weeks ago i came home with three newbies and i have noticed that the smaller one is being badly bullied by the other two. She has big bald patches on both her thighs and quite a bit of blood and big scabs. I have been using johnsons anti peck spray and purple spray for a week and it hasn't worked so i have now bought some stronger poultry anti peck spray. it absolutley stinks! i have been using this since last friday, as well as the purple spray but they are still pulling her feather out! It has got so bad that for the past couple of days she won't come out of their house, because as soon as she does they peck her. I am worried about seperating her because i know this is not good, but i am at a loss of what to do next. I have thought about bumper bits, which would be ok for one of them, but the other has a cracked beak, so i am concerned about putting a bumper bit on it incase it breaks all together. Any suggestions would be great - i am panicking quite a bit!

I know there is lots of advice on here, and someone clever will find a thread for you... but in the meantime, you could try putting one of the bullies in a 'sin bin' in the run to see if the other two pal up together. use something like a puppy crate or even a cat carrier.

alternatively, you could put the victim in the sin bin with food water etc, and let her be in there for a couple of days or until any wounds have healed up and then try again.

Hello,

Only new to the whole chook keeping world (so no personal experience I'm afraid! ) but, I have read quite a lot about it and as beach chick says maybe it would be worth separating the worst bully for a while. From what I understand as soon as you take one out of the picture the pecking order shifts. Might shift in the little victims favour.

Anyway, good luck fingers crossed for her. :(

my buff orp has started being a bully, i use a water pistol which does seem to work, the bamboo idea is a good one aswell, i have also heard that holding the bully gently down can help like a cockeral telling them enough, but it would be good to seperate the vitcim i ahve to do this for a while which really helped. What anti peck spray are you using? we use ukadex its stinks  but it has seemed to work just the smell makes me heave!!!

good luck :)
