Trougher
My son for the last few days has been pointing out to me that one of our chickens is getting an increasingly red (or perhaps more accurately dark pink) face. Is this normal? All three (ex-batts) are starting to get more red in their combs and wattles, having been very pale when I first got them. Perhaps this is just an extension of that and is a sign of health? Thanks very much. Edited October 24, 2010 by Guest
green
I would have thought red face means that they're happy and healthy, so hopefully nothing to worry about.
jester
Hi, hens faces redden as they become closer to egg laying, just as the wattle and comb get redder and bigger. My chickens faces are getting redder daily so hoping to get some eggs soon
migsy
I thinkk that is normal for rescued ex batts. Means that they are doing well.
abwsco
Yes, definately normal for ex batts
Redwing
yes lack of sunlight and a hot atmosphere make battery hens combs large and pale, they should get redder and maybe shrink back a bit as they start to live a normal life

My chickens faces are getting redder daily so hoping to get some eggs soon My Bluebelle has got a really red face, but not much of a comb or wattles. I think she'll be the first one to lay, but I might have to wait a bit longer. I've been more worried about the Speckledy as her face is really pale and I thought she might be a bit younger until it occurred to me that maybe their general colouring could have something to do with the redness/paleness of their face. The Bluebelle has got a really dark head, whereas the Speckledy's head is speckled and white, could that be the reason her 'head gear' is a very light pink and not deeper red?
