stripeybunny
We collected our 3 chickens on Sunday, we got a goldine (Rhubarb), an amber star (Custard) and a cream crested legbar (doesn't have a name yet). Rhubarb is a bit older and is definately the boss! she is settling in well. I'm really worried that the other 2 haven't worked out how to use the grub, they don't seem to be eating anything, how can I encourage them? should I give them something else to eat instead? I've hung a cabbage in the run and I'm going to give them some marmite on toast tomorrow. Should I try making them some 'porrige' with their layers pellets? We haven't yet tried introducing the superglug, just using a normal drinker for now.
percy049
Our chickens didnt like the grub either, so we bought 2 open bowls, which they prefer. I would just feed them normal layers pellets to begin with, and introduce treats after about a week or two. Don't add water to pellets, because it just makes a sloppy mess that chickens (well ours anyway) wont eat.
Clairey_Fairy
My girls love 'porridge' made with their pellets and water, (sometimes with a bit of bokashi bran). I use boiling water, leave it to soak in, and cool till it;s warm, and especially on a cold morning like this morning they love it. Just don't make too much, I just do a small bowl so they eat it before it gets left/tipped over/trodden in etc. They don't have this every day. chicken bark
I'm sure they will get the hang of it eventually - mine did. As others have said avoid treats for a bit. When you come to give them marmite you should soak the bread before you give it to them as it helps to stop it swelling in their crop. I give mine soggy marmite sandwiches every now and then. MarkBevBen
None of our girls seem to mind the Grub or Glug and happily eat and drink away I've started worming them and during this time haven't been giving any treats at all (nasty mum hey ) but they've been eating their grub no problems at all! scarlettohara
How about Crumble Congratulations on your new girls
stripeybunny
cream crested legbar is now called Crumble Custard and Rhubarb are both using the grub now (although custard will only eat when rhubarb is well out of the way! Still couldn't get Crumble to eat anything even when I gave her a separate bowl for herself. Then I tried making some layers pellet porridge and she gobbled that down very fast so that seems to be the answer for now. I might even try intoducing the superglug next week to see what they make of that. Thanks for all the advice, will post photos soon!
