Which app?

Recommended Posts

OK, slightly related to Tasha's iphone thread....

Irritating chap at work has just got an iphone and has spent the best part of the day fiddling with it and asking me what to do... goodness knows why he is asking me.... I've never had one.

He wants to know which app to get to use for file transfer - I think he wants to put a picture from his lappy onto the phone. Also one for pictures/photos.. I think he means that he wants to view them on the phone... I am assuming that he can't do this with what he has already.

I just wish he'd RTFM and leave me in peace.... I am glad to have got home today

I knew you'd have the answers

Take a leaf out of a good old urban legend.

Him - "How do I transfer files between iPhone and PC?"

You - "Did you read the instructions in the manual?"

Him - "I skim-read them, but hoped you could give me a few pointers."

You - "Hmmm. It should be really straightforward, so if you're having problems I think there's going to be a pretty fundamental problem. Do you have the original packaging?"

Him - "Original packaging? Wow. Is it that serious?"

You - "Yes. I'm afraid so. What you'll need to do is pack the phone up just as it was supplied to you and send it back to the shop you bought it from. Obviously, they'll need to know why the phone is being returned, so do make sure you put into the package an explanatory note telling them that you're too stupid to own an iPhone."

If that doesn't get him reading the manual thoroughly then nothing will. And even if it doesn't, I doubt he'll bother you with any further questions.

If he has got an iPhone then I guess he also has iTunes on it and he can just go to the iTunes store and download an app that will do file transfers. I have 'Air Sharing' and 'File Sharing' Apps on my iPod touch and both work fine. For photos I just use Bluetooth, which I am sure he must have too :?

I love your way of doing it though Major

The general approach is sorely tempting sometimes, but it's only fair that I remind you it was some blatant plagiarism on my part of an urban legend.

There are a number of other techie jokes you could replay here too, especially since the subject is an engineer.

  • You could suggest it's a PEBKAC problem. If he were to look it up, he'd find it's a useful acronym meaning "problem exists between keypad and chair".
  • If you're speaking to him, you could tell him it's an "eye dee ten tee" problem. This sounds comfortably technical until you write it down, at which point "eye dee ten tee" becomes ID10T.
  • If he prides himself on IT ability, you could tell him it's a "layer 8 problem". This is the most arcane and anorakky of the possibilities, since computer networking theory adheres to the OSI 7 layer model, with layer 1 being the physical cabling and layer 7 being the application. Layer 8, therefore, is the logical next step, referring inescapably to the user.
