katek
Do people given their chooks warm , in the winter? If so what do you give?
PeckyBeak
I mix up some layers pellets with some warm water and some cheap brand cooked peas and sweetcorn nibs, the pellets soak the water up alot and it gets quite thick so make sure you let it stand and then add a bit more water so that it's not too thick. You could add other left over cooked veg for a change. I also add a tablespoon of cod liver oil to the mix for extra goodness. Sometimes I make them up some Readybrek, which they also love. PeckyBeak
Hi Katek, just seen you only have 3 chooks so go easy on the cod liver oil, probably about a teaspoon would be enough.

katek
I;m now giving them warm water with chicken crumb - ex-bats I've only had them a week. I pt some corn or meal work on top in the afternoon. This is all they will eat now, they do not want the crumb in the grub pot. Is this ok? Wet food sours quickly and just isnt practical to feed long term, its also a tie if you want to go away for a few days, i'd only give them a little as a treat and leave them wth the dry food to eat the rest of the time With regards to winter feeding warming food is more important than warm food Warming food is stuff that takes more effort to digest or gives sustained energy corn and oats are good for this A small treat of corn before roosting time will help keep the chooks warmer at night

It's sometimes easy to forget that they live with you not the other way round and I'm sure we've all done it to a degree. Redwing sums it up nicely. Wet food won't keep and it is a tie to have to prepare. Good luck let us know how you get on.
