Bank Security Check.....!

Recommended Posts

I often get calls checking my debit card transactions from my bank as I can travel for work and so my card can be used all over the place with most transactions being in hotels or restaurants - this is all fine and shows the bank is doing its job

In the last two weeks my card has been used in Gloucester, Nottingham, Leeds, France, Belgium, Switzerland, London, Northampton and Bristol so I knew I was due for a check.. and sure enough when I stopped at a 'Pets at Home' store last night in Wiltshire the transaction was stopped and the store was instructed to phone my bank (at five mins to closing time  ) incidently its good to know that I can spend several hundred pounds in Switzerland with no issues but that £22 worth of cat food rings alarm bells with the bank!!

In front of a steadily increasing queue of people the till operator was asked for my full name, card number and expiry, then the phone was handed to me and I had to give my full address, estimated balance of my account, overdraft limit, place and date of birth and security code off the back of the card

So by now everyone in the queue have everything they need to use my card details themselves and exactly how much they could skim off!

For a bank that is looking to protect my transactions they have a funny way of conducting the security checks!!

And me. In the bank itself!!

I had a call from an automated service that had highlighted a large transaction, not authorised by me, in Chile. I phoned the number I was given and spoke to an operator in India. He assured me that the payment would not go through, but 2 weeks later it did, leaving me overdrawn. I was using an ATM machine at the bank when I found out. I spoke to someone in the bank who told me I could use the phone on the wall nearby to speak to someone about the matter. In front of a large queue of people I had to give out a list of security answers and tell them a company I have a direct debit with! I agree Redwing - not very secure at all!!
