One of our girls is laying for the first time. She is laying at night. Is this normal? I am worried the egg wil get broken in the Eglu

It is unusual - are you sure she isn't laying very early in the morning?

 

I wouldn't worry too much about breakages. We went away for 4 days once ,leaving our flock of 8 happily laying away & had not once breakage when we got back (just a very big Omelette for supper!)

Wasn't you worried about leaving them for so long? We have only had our girls since August and have not had to leave them yet. How do you plan for this?

I let mine out at 6.30 the other morning and there in the nest box was a lovely white egg. It was not there the night before when I said goodnight to them

Her third today. This time in the afternoon. I suspect she was laying first thing as suggested. Thanks for replies.

I found an egg from my Bantam Wyandotte Pandora in the morning today. She laid it after I closed for the night - in the evening, when I opened the egg port to see if they where all inside the Eglu she was sitting on the nest. She normally lays at around 11 o'clock, but because I was in the garden most of the day with my dog, which she is a little scared of, she waited. She went into the Eglu a few times but rushed out every time my dog barked.

I was going to post on this very subject, for the past 3 weeks at least one of our 5 black Rhodes lays an egg on the roosting bars of the cube, a lot of the time it will have been pecked in the top causing a small dent but not piercing the membrane.

At present, at night we leave the cube door half shut so they get up when they want, but every day now there will be an egg on the bars when I go to check they are alright at 6.45am.

There are never any other eggs in the nest box until at least 8.00am so why is she laying so early? ( or late in the evening )

 

I have no way of knowing. It's not really a problem but it seems one hen is well out of sync, all 5 used to lay in the nest box.

It takes approx 25 hours to make an egg - times will vary and days off....

I found an egg on the roosting bars on Monday morning 6.30am. Don't know who layed it.

I never had eggs before 6.30 until the clocks change now most mornings when I let them out at 6.30 I have at lest one egg layed or one of the girls is on the throne.
