empty eglu what new chicks to get ?

Recommended Posts

Am the very proud owner of a new pink cube which my 4 girls have taken to very well. Im afraid I was abit mean and just cleaned out and closed up the eglu classic and left in in the wir where the cube also sits so they didnt have much choice. I lifted them on to the ladder but then then came down themselves and climed back up. This evening they happpily took them selves off to bed. they look very small in there though and need some friends. What should I get . THe girls are an araucane, light sussex, silkie and bearded silkie that I got in Aug at approx 18 weeks and have never layed yet. Im thinking hybrid? as really fancy some eggs now. Thinking of getting 3 now and 3 more later and then that will be 10 in total. I will try to divide the wir in two with the cube in one section and the classic in the other initially for the 3 new ones. how long will ave to do this for. I was thinking a few days then letting them out in the outside run together but letting them slep seperatly for a week is that ok? some places I have fead suggest keeping them completly appart. they will be divided but will be able to see each other. I ma planning to divide the run using a guinea pig run that comes in section so can be made into different shapes. Does that all sound ok or completly wrong? thanks

Where abouts are you - people might be able to suggest where you can look for hens, and that may dicatate what is available? :D

You're right to keep them separate using the guinea pig run - keep them in that for a few weeks, rather than days. Then let them LF together with you around to keep an eye on them :)

You could always think about re-homing some battery hens - either in the first 3 new ones, or next year as the latest 3.

There are always lots coming out of cages and looking for homes and they are all over the country too.

Added to my family are a wynnedott, a maran and a bluebell . Not sure if I will get more which was my original plan as I was surprised at how noisy the have become learing to get on together and am scraed the neighbours will complain. I shall try to to be greed and be very pleased that I have 7 chicken (but have never had an egg yet  )
