Scotty
Hi Chaps, Does any body else have rabbits that insit on sitting in the cold wet rain; rather than "opting" for the dry environment of their Eglu? I have real trouble trying to entice them inside, especially at night!! Scotty
bigmommasally
I don't have an Eglu for my bunnies but mine also like sitting in the cold and wet. I only feed mine their pellets at night time in their hutch so they are normally very happy to go in to bed to get their food.
lillybettybabs
I haven't had outdoor rabbits before but i guess theat they are tougher and acclimatize to the change in weather very well. As long as they have access to the warm and dry i wouldn't worry to much.
bronze
I was wondering about this too asI read on here its best to leave their door open as they are liveliest dusk and dawn so I hav ebeen leaving it open all the time but its freezing cold and we're due snow. Should I start shutting the door. My rabbits don't seem to use the eglu except as a loo (expensive loo) and do I need to make sure they have loads of bedding (that they can spread down the run pah
lillybettybabs
How about covering the whole run with a cheap car cover, that way they can stay out but be protected?
franklyrabbit
Hi - yes we've covered our rabbits' run with alternating layers of tarpaulins and bubble-wrap which should help insulate it. Then we overhang one of the tarpaulins over the front entrance to keep the wind out. We never shut the eglu door as it would frighten our rabbits but the eglu is stuffed with hay. That said, it has been very cold all day and the buns have chosen to be out on the lawn all day (their eglu and run are up on the terrace). They're pretty hardy critters
lillybettybabs
I think it's the way to go, Bunnies happy as they can stay outside, Bunny Mummy happy as they are protected for the nasty cold weather.
franklyrabbit
Hi lillybetbabs - just noticed that you're on line! Yes, here's to snug bunnies this winter!
lillybettybabs
Hello, I'm nursing a poorly bunny at the moment, She's trapped her nail and snapped it off and in the struggly to free herself she has crushed her toe on the other foot , She has a habit of exploring. She has a very large splint on the crushed foot now.
franklyrabbit
Oh poor little thing I hope she mends quickly - it must be extra work for you at the moment. Fingers crossed, at the moment our lot are fairing well.
Alis girls
I have an OAP bun who lost his mate this year - I put him in an old hutch in the garage at night and give him a snugglesafe and he seems ok. During the day he is back in usual hutch - also got him a little bed from Pets at home with an sack on it to add extra warmth. Do worry about him as hes old and very dear to us. Attempts to find a female mate have not been successful. I think so long has he survives the winter will try again in spring.

CrazyDaizy
How about covering the whole run with a cheap car cover, that way they can stay out but be protected? This would be the obvious thing to do I would try and entice them into the Eglu at night, especially in the winter, and shut the door to keep bunny warm, and open again in the morning. Our bunny has a hutch but "freeranges" during the day (when we are at home) with the chickens. And yeah, he too seems happy to sit in the rain!!! beach chick
re shutting them in the eglu at night: there isnt enough room in there for them to stretch out I'm afraid... unless they are dwarf bunnies. when ours were in the eglu and run we left the (eglu) door open at all times - and as someone said above, it was an expensive toilet. ours now live in the WIR run/electric fence with the chickens. everyone is shut in the WIR at night; the rabbits pootle about while the girls are in the cube. they have an old rabbit ark covered with plastic sheeting and stuffed with hay to sleep in if they want to, but I think they usually just snuggle up together in the aubiose - they are pretty hardy. lillybettybabs
My pampered bunnies have a rablu for outdoor time, I do think the compartment is a little small to shut bunnies inside. Maybe Omlet will start manufacturing larger ones for larger bottoms.
beach chick
I swear mine actually go to sleep outside - becoz I go out with a torch at about 5.15 at the mo to shoo the bunnies into the WIR so I can shut the pophole. chooks are all in bed, quail asleep - and Sapphire and Lily are snuggled up together out in the electric fence run! they know I'm coming now, and at first sight of the torch they generally skip up the ladder into the WIR. bronze
well mine seem to be ok theyve been completely covered using omlet covers since we moved here as its done nothing but be miserable. theyre not as active though. I stuffed the eglu chock full of straw bedding and made sure they have mor than enough food so all should be ok
