smelly maran?

Recommended Posts

I git 3 new chickens at POL on Fri and one is a Maran. Now I have an amazing sense opf smell which is not always a ggod thing but my Maran really smells. Its a kind of musty dirty smell but the minute I walk in the run I can smell her and the smell stays under my nose for ages and makes me feel sick. Im a bit worried about this to be honest. Any ideas?

Did the girls all come from the same place? I'm not expert but maybe check there the smell is coming

from (If it's coming from the beak this could be an infection)

Is her vent clear or does it have anything hanging from it or drip marks?

Again if she has a dirty vent and her droppings smell more than normal then this could be a little infection too....

They can get smelly if they've been brooding recently and in this case maybe just a little bath when

they're settled in and over the stress of moving here's a good chicken bath video!

I'm going to do mine soon as they are smelly because they don't know how to roost and sit in their droppings at night

Could this be a possibility? Did she roost where she came from?

Two of mine stank horrid when I got them but I think it was because they had been on a fairly strong mix of ACV, it soon went.

Agree with Megalin if it's a clingy smell it could be vent infection or I had one with enteritis that the smell lingered with.

Hens raised indoors can sometimes smell a bit, perhaps yours has only recently been outside

The smell should lessen in time (anyone who has rehomed ex battery hens will agree with that as ex batts really do smell!)

If you are very bothered about it then give the hen a quick bath. Do this in the evening and keep her inside to dry overnight
