honorandkit
...is there anything I should do to the coop to make it warmer for the girls? Having only got the girls at the start of the summer, we've never had to cope with a winter with them before. They are in a wooden coop, with aubiose bedding. The house is big enough for 4-6 birds, but since we lost Mimi, we just have the 3. I am probably being silly, but I hate to think of them cold. If it gets really cold (and/or snowy), what should we do?
migsy
Accoring to others on this forum, they should be OK without any intervention. Maybe put a deeper litter in the coup and close the door if it is really cold and frosty. I'm sure people have some tips though.
honorandkit
Thanks for replying. We never leave the coop door open anyway, so maybe I'll just put more Aubiose in. I am too soppy for my own good!
Stella14
I'm newer than you to chickens, but generally livestock just need more concentrated calories in the winter. That enables them to keep themselves warm. They grow extra fur or feather to see them through. I am giving mine extra corn in the afternoon, after they have had several hours of going at the balanced proprietary feed.
Sam
Recently bought some chickens and got some advice from the farmer. She recommended that we did nothing and just let them be. They all huddle together when they are in their coop so they generate enough heat to stay warm and cozy even when its cold outside!
