My oldest chicken edith is very quiet, she is standing very still with her neck tucked right into her body. She is wormed regularly and has access to a diatom earth dust bath so I have ruledout lice and worms. Could it just be the cold making her miserable as she is fairly bare underneath from her last moult. thanks

How old is Edith?

 

I'd give her a basic health check **Click**to see if anything obvious shows up.

 

A moult can make them fairly miserable, as can worms. If you used a herbal wormer, I'd do her again with Flubenvet.

Edith is about 2 years 3 months old now shes a hybrid aswell. She has been recently flubenvetted aswell, I vermex about 1 a month then flubenvet about once every 6 months.

It could just be an age related decline I'm afraid. If the health check doesn't show anything, it might be worth taking her to the vet.

thats what I thought, she seems okay other than just being very quiet and subdued, eyes are bright, no nasal discharge or anything like that, how long do hybrids live for?Think this maybe her last winter by the look of it

Shes getting poultry spice in the water aswell cause I heard its good for plumage

I was thinking of putting her in the shed but was worried that the other choocks would pick on her when they get put back togeher again, I did try n tie a blanket on her but she wouldnt walk properly with it on

I found that a softie in the pipeline caused a few days of under the weather when I had a couple of hybrids - they seemed particularly prone to it, whereas I haven't experienced it with my pure breeds.

 

What sort of hybrid is she? Some are more long-lived than others and I wouldn't rule out age-related decline

How long ago was she wormed. Ex batt Lily spent 4/5 days last week looking miserable and hunched up. i put it down to being a softie at first but it went on too long for that. I wormed them again this week even though they were all done about 3 months ago and she perked up on the second day, I'm presuming it was worms.

In my experience, they seem to have a shorter lifespan than other hybrids, so it could just be age related after all. However, always worth a trip to the vet if you are uncertain.

I agree, they do seem to be amongst the shortest lived of the various hybrids. They're the original little brown hen, engineered for a prolific first egg laying season and destined for replacement at around 18 months.

Well after posting originally Edith is still (thankfully) plodding along and seems better in herself (albeit still fairly bald)

she behaving normally againg and Ive put it down to the cold as since I started closing the eglu door at night she seems to have perked up, eating and drinking and walking round fine enough for a 2 year old warren

 

I must say though that in the last week her moulting has advanced rapidly, I thought she had stopped but its got worse n worse this week, there are feathers everytwhere, her poor tail and undercarriage is very sp"Ooops, word censored!"!
