Jules.
We've got serious computer problems Our eMac was making loudish noises on Saturaday, & then yesterday it sudddenly switched itself off as we were thying to send an email. Now when we try to turn it on it gets to about 8 seconds after we've started it up , then just switches itself off again. We've changed the battery hoping that might help, & looked at the mac geeks on the interent but still we can't get it started. Luckily we still have our old eMac which I'm using now, but the other one has loads of stuff stored on it that we'd like to recover if we can. Can you help, please? Geoid
Does anything appear on the screen when you switch it on? The data/hard disk should be fine and the stuff on it recoverable.
Jules.
no just the white screen with the apple logo and the spinning timer underneath which spins about 5 times then stops and the mac then switches off
Geoid
Do you have the installation CD the mac came with? If so, try starting your computer from that (I think you put the CD in the drive and hold down C) if that works, go to disk utility and verifiy the disk, this should show up any problems there are (and repair them too!) Geoid
Ok, try to get the files off first. Do you have a firewire to firewire cable? Looks like this: If so start up your emac holding down the T key, this will start it in target mode, using the firewire cable, connect it to another mac. The working mac will hopefully recognise your emac as a removable drive, copy the files over.
Jules.
Hi I have managed to copy all my files across onto the working mac and put them onto cds thank you the mac will still not start up not sure if this is a operating system fault rather than hardware

PurpleTree
Just asked hubby, he's a total Mac geek, he thinks it's probably just dead from age. He gave this link http://www.ehow.com/how_2160597_hard-drive-quick-data-transfer.html for moving your data, but you've already done that.
