A builder friend of mine has just put on face book that he cut down a huge tree today so I ahve asked him for a branch to use as a perch for my girls I bet they will love it I cant wait

I asked a builder round here for some stumps so I can make my chooks a stumpery. He looked at me as if I was barking but he said he would put some out for me as they are clearing quite a few trees on the building site here. Sad for the trees but good for my chooks.

I am now in possession of 3 beautiful branches and one has loads of very beautiful pine cones still attached. I have put them in the outside run so the girls with get a surpise in the morn. not that they ventured out much today i the snow

A stumpery is a collection of root stumps. You half bury them in the earth and apparently they encourage lots of grubs and bugs which should be fun for a chook (though not much good in this weather). Alas I can't take a photo as I don't have a digital camera but it is on my Xmas list (the camera that is, not the bugs). Here's hoping.

What a good idea. Take care when the wood rots that there aren't any cracks chickens can get their feet stuck in. Someone's chicken had a nasty accident.

I used to have an old stump in the run and it was buggy and good. Not quite so effective when I kept putting stalosan on it when they pooed all over it.
