Janepie33
DD and her Uni housemates will be leaving their house empty for a few days over Christmas and have been asked by their landlady to leave the heating on around 12 degrees constantly or 21 degrees for a couple of hours each day (apparantly last year's students turned the heating off completely resulting in burst pipes and a great deal of expense! ). My question is......... Is it cheaper to leave the heating on low for longer or high for shorter?
chickencam
I would have thought that lower for longer would be cheaper and more effective because it would only kick on when needed rather than at the same time every day.
Patricia W
Being a landlord, I'd ask her to specify. If they choose and there is a problem she could say it was their fault. Personally I'd go for the 12 degrees throughout. And if I were the landlord, I'd be asking for the dates they were away and tell them I'd pop in from time to time to check the place over- just in case. Steve the Gas
If the boiler has a frost stat - it will take care of this, as long as it is switched on
Olly
I'm sure I've read on here (the fount of all knowledge!) that it's actually cheaper to keep the heating on all the time at a low level, than to heat the house up at intervals. I think it was Charlottechicken who posted that, and as you know she is the Queen of Thrift! good idea to ask the landlady to specify, though. That was me,I think We tried it for a season & it worked out much cheaper than the 'bung it on when its cold' method. But it will depend on a lot of things...the heating system, the insulation in the house etc
