green
Hi all, I want to learn how to crochet and I'm wondering what sort of hook(s) to buy. I found some bamboo ones on Ebay, and as I love my bamboo knitting needles I'm tempted to buy them. Has anyone used bamboo ones, are they any good or is it just down to personal preference? bluekarin
I haven't but I do want some as they sound lovely. I have a thin metal one (which was my very first one from a charity shop) which bends slightly and plastic ones which make a horrible squeak, especially with acrylic mix wool *shudders*
chickweed
I would like to try out a bamboo hook. I've heard that they are better than metal ones. Let us know how you go on.
green
Well, I've ordered some (and decided to treat myself some more of those lovely knitting needles ), I hope that I can get the hang of crocheting quickly... I can do a chain from here to China, but never could get my head around doing anything else with a crochet hook.
Egluntyne
You want **this book**. The best book for explaining basic stitches to beginners that I have seen.
craftyhunnypie
I'll second that - it's a brilliant book. I learnt off you tube, but it was in American terms & they call the stitches differently. I soon learnt how to interpret though. Crochet hooks, I like the ergonomic ones. They are strong plastic with a rubber coating where your fingers grip. I also have some metal ones, but any less than a 3mm & they can bend. I have a bamboo one & whilst good for the yarn, it feels too lightweight & flimsy. Emma.x
green
Thanks for the tip. Edited to add: I've ordered the book, but as the hooks have arrived already I've been trying learn how to make granny squares with the help of youtube. I know how to make the middle bit (woohoo!), just need to practice to make it look a bit tidier. Quite like the hooks so far!
