Scots Dumpies and Polands

Recommended Posts

Super pictures! Your Scots Dumpies look just gorgeous with their little dumpy legs, and I certainly have the breed on my short list now: really want them, but OH has said 6 chooks is all we are having at any one time.

You are right about the Polands being rather apt to be at the bottom of the pecking order. It must be the hair do. My Frizzle x Poland is the most docile, sweet hen, but luckily the Silkies do not get nasty as they too have a silly hair do, particularly my little gold one whose hair do is rather excessive.

The good news is that Sandra has contacted me.

You've been fortunate Cheaky Chook - I did ask about Silikes with them but was told no, that Silkies have a tendency to peck :(

I think the problem is that the Polands can't see upwards due to the hair style  so are easier to attack.

Patricia that's good news about the aracaunas and orpingtons though - I particularly love the Lavender Orps!!

I have a Bantam Australorp who lives happily with them, they seem quite a docile breed [and are 1/2 Orpington so maybe that is why?] I did wonder about trying more Australorps? She lays 5 days out of 7, and a medium sized egg which is good for such a wee Bantam :) I love her for her nature though, she is such a content wee thing.

The Polands are more pets!! One of my girls was laying every other day, the other hasn't laid for months

I'm glad you found Sandra :D

Are Dumpies small, Poland type, sized birds, or are they more the size of an Australorp / Orpington? It is difficult to tell from pictures in books. I always whish that the books had a measure against their hen breed pictures. All the books I have had makes it look as if all chickens are the same size and when I saw an Orpington I was amazed by how big they are. My Poland x Frizzle is my biggest bird and my smallest (a really wee thing) is my white Frizzle, Daisy. She may be small but she can't half give as good as got. My top chook is my white Silkie who can be a bit of a little madam but for some reason can't really be bothered with my two black birdies, the Poland x Frizzle and a fairly large black Silkie. These two black birds seem to go everywhere together like real best friends.

Sorry for the delay in replying I was looking for my note with their comparitive weights!!

The Polands come as bantams or large fowl, mine are bantams so really very tiny - Nellie [Frizzle] is 805g, Sylvia 614g [actually feeling a wee bit skinny right now] and Gordon, the Rooster is 1537g

My Bantam Australorp, Betty, is 1130g - she is smaller than the Dumpies, they are 1001g and 1141g

Hope that helps
