Auto door randomly closing during the day

Even the chooks have now given up chasing the magpies out of their pen, and they all seem to now be settled as a mixed flock of chickens and magpies happily feeding together.... they are eating me out of house and home, I thought having a cockerell would mean he would protect his food and girls from everything!!

I half expect the magpies to be going to bed with the chooks by the end of the week!!!! perhaps i should expect to be hatching magpies in the spring!!!

 

Do they not know that the food is for chickens and not for the entire population of hampshire magpies!!!! AAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!

I know how you feel though. Mine have stopped chasing off the woodpigeons and there are now loads of them. Goodness knows how many clutches have hatched out this year. They are disease ridden things too.

Mine are the same with the local little birds which I don't mind. They don't take too much. Recently a rather splendid pheasant has been sharing their food. He walks in and helps himself while the others just watch.

My girls just share theirs with a friendly Robin, the pheasants are too busy jumping up and down under the wild bird feeders knocking everything on to the ground .

We have a robin and his missus who eat the corn I didnt throw into the run because my aim is off

We have, possibly, the entire population of cambridgeshire's moorhens coming to spend each day with our chickens! (27 at the last count!) Word has obviously got round that there is an all-you can-eat buffet available all day and, boy, are they making the most of it.

 

In all seriousness, though, it worries me about disease they might bring. They poo bright green poos everywhere. I spend far too much of my time trying to poo pick and chase them off.

I have got the plans to one of

and am in negotiations with OH to make one for me. It will keep the fat woodpigeons and rats away from the food.

Most of your mites / parasites will come from the wild bird population it wouild be best if you could keep the seperate.

Magpies will eat eggs too, chicks and attack a sick hen imo, I give a lead injection as a cure for the maggies....
