Hello,

Ugh.... Feeling low about the girls today.

We've had the 3 of them for about 4 months now, when they came 2 of them had myco and

I had to put them on anti-biotics and then a co"Ooops, word censored!" of herbal remedy which seemed to knock

it on the head. Then one of them got scaly leg and now they have worms!!

 

I feel like I do everything I can for them. Clean them out once a week with poultry shield and

stalosan F, poo pick everyday run and house, they have vitamins, a bit of free range everyday,

fresh fruit and seeds porridge and before bed treats, a snugglesafe in their house (as they sleep on the floor still ) etc etc.... And they still keep getting various ailments.

Where they came from they only had little rabbit hutch type things to stay out of the rain etc and I wonder whether they are just a bit weak and need a good bit of strengthening up.

 

But I keep thinking there's something I'm missing, that seems like a lot of illness in 4 months to me.

Scaley leg mite and worms are pretty common. I'll put my hand up to say that over the years, mine have had both. Wild birds being the main culprits.

 

All you can do is treat accordingly, when necessary. Some people like to use a herbal supplement re worms. Others prefer to take no measures at all.

 

Don't despair. The myco wasn't your fault, neither are the above. Just one of those things.

Scaly leg is a real pain - I have one girl who is prone to it. My chickens have also had worms and one chicken we bought brought in lice. If they free-range - wild birds can spread all sorts of things. It does feel horrible though..but if they already had myco, they might have been more prone - not your fault at all.

 

You are doing all the right things...the fact that you worry shows that you are great chicken owner...

Just my 0.02$ - I think you're doing fine. Just sometimes despite our best efforts bad things happen.

Aw thanks, sometimes It gets me down if I'm not well myself.

Can get a bit oversensitive about them, feels like it's just one thing after the other!

2 are moulting as well so I think they are just generally a bit rough.

I hope the summer brings better times for them.

Having worms is "normal" if your hens free-range, I think, and having to treat them periodically with Flubenvet as a result is normal too.

The fact that your birds came with Myco in the first place means you were starting on a bad note.... Don't beat yourself up you are doing well. As soon as spring comes around you will feel better. Get the birds wormed, deloused spread some sudocrem on their legs and they should be fine. Keep the feed very simple, sometimes feeding a lot of treats actually inbalances the diet so just be a little careful. A simple diet of good quality layers and corn in the afternoon along with grit and they should be fine.

Yes I hadn't thought of that.

I'm putting in a garvo order when I've finished this lot of Farmgate stuff as I've not been too

impressed with it. That may liven them up a bit too if the rumors are correct.

I agree with all of the above.

The Myco is just unlucky - the birds came with that, so it wasn't your fault, and most of us never see it.

The worms - normal, and that's why most of us worm our hens regularly - it's not a problem and there's nothing you can do to prevent it, just treat it.

Scaly leg - unlucky but not unusual, and again there's nothing you can do to stop them catching it, all you can do is treat it. You'd be looking after your girls badly if you hadn't spotted and treated these problems, in fact you're doing a good job because you found the problems.

 

So DON'T WORRY! You are doing fine, and when the weather improves and your chooks get their feathers back, everything will seem better.

If your birds came with myco and now are having various diseases despite careful management, it may just be one of those things but it may be that the conditions they were in before you got them were inadequate so they are predisposed to disease. Try getting your chickens from another place and see if anything is different.

Oh yes I'm never going there again! I've made a complaint and was quite cross to begin with but

am just letting it slide now.

Going to Thorne's in the spring to get some more girls, can't wait!!
