poachedegg
We are looking for some Autumn sunshine next year and whilst I am a great fan of the internet I feel it is giving me too much information!! I would be grateful for any suggestions of areas - I am quite fussy and don't want 'HP and chips', however would still like to have access to things. We would be looking at probably getting a private villa/apartment but am really stuck on which island/area to go for...........it is 20 years since we have been, so things have bound to have changed, so I am all ears! It would be me, OH, DS (17) and DD (10) going, so would need some suitable facilities and a nice beach.
Snowy
We stayed at a resort called Bahia Feliz - just east of Playa del Ingles and San Agustin. You can see it on google earth - it's only a small place between the road and the sea, but it was a peaceful resort and there is a small commercial centre which is all pavement cafes and small shops. Or if you want real excitement Playa del Ingles is a 5 minute bus ride. There were also regular coach trips to all the usual sights, Palmitos Park was our favourite. The beach is typical grey volcanic sand, but we spent most of our time by the pool anyway. We stayed at Playa Feliz and our appartment had the sea out the back window and the pool out the front door. It was a fabulous holiday until OH got into an argument with a german about towels on deckchairs and swore never to go back
Space Chick
I love Lanzarote and Tenerife. I think most of the big resorts have the "pie and chip" brigade, but also have nicer more authentic places too

Jules.
I can't recommend the Canaries, but I can recommend here http://www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk/resorts/villacana/ Of course the weather won't be as good as the Canaries in October, but we've been to Villacana at that time & it's been lovely & warm- not roasting hot as it was this year when we went in August
