For a few pounds a year (usually paid two-yearly) you can buy a domain name, eg scarlettschickens.co.uk (as long as it isn't owned already). With this domain name you can create one or many email addresses (eg scarlett@scarlettchickens.co.uk).

If you use an email program like Thunderbird (or Outlook Express, although I've never used this) you can easily pick up ad send mail from your new email addresses, as you might decide you want to use that instead of your old hotmail address.

Alternatively, when you set up your domain name you can set it up so that any mail addressed to scarlett@scarlettchickes.co.uk gets forwarded to your hotmail account. This means you can receive emails addressed to the new email address, without actually sending from your new email address.

There are lots of providers out there. I use www.me2web.com. I am sure there are others who are as good or better.

Are any other free mail addresses allowed, e.g. googlemail/gmail/mail etc.? It seems odd they don't allow hotmail, but I guess it might be a historical thing. Does your isp have any emails you can use? They normally do.

edit: I just checked and free emails are supposedly not allowed at all. If you can't sort one out via your isp then drop me a pm and I can sort you out with one of my spares.

You will have a default virgin email address associated with your account. Do you know the main username and password for the account? You will need this to be able to access your acount online to access webmail (which is a Google-type interface) for the main one and to set up extra email addresses.

The main account page is here, with the My Virgin Media (and email) links on the right.

I use Virgin, so if you need any more info, feel free to ask.
