Eggasperated
I think Carol has lice again as she recovered from the moult but now has feathers missing on her back just above her tail. I was hoping to treat her myself rather than taking her to the vets again and reading on here Johnsons anti-mite spray (not licensed for poultry) is suggested. Is it ok to spray her on her back? Or will she ingest it from her preening gland? Should I also spray under her wings and around her vent even though I can't see evidence of lice there? Very grateful for any advice -thank you. Redwing
I do a blast under each wing and one just above or below the vent Make sure you get right down to the skin round the vent
Eggasperated
So not on her back where I can actually see something on her? Does this mean the spray is systemic so you don't need the spray to have contact with the lice to kill them? (sorry probably asking lots of stupid questions - terrified of doing something wrong and hurting my girls),
chick wiggle
I do pits (under wings ), vent and back of neck, seems to do the job
Redwing
If you can get it down to the skin its is systemic but not for very long apparently Lice seem to like warm dark moist areas so normally end up under the wings and especially around the vent so those seem to be the best places to spray, also its easier to get to the skin there If you want to spray her back then I'd gently run your hand against the feathers and spray so that it hits the skin
Eggasperated
Ok thank you, she actually has bald patches on her back anyway which is exactly what happened before when she had lice I think she must pull at the feathers. However have another problem, having sprayed Carol I now find the spray, which I bought this week, has an expiry date of last February . I'm assuming it can't do any harm but does that mean the active ingredient will be useless? I will be ringing Regency Poultry tomorrow to return it. The Dogmother
If she has lice, then she'll likely be pulling her feathers as they itch. Check to see that she's not being pecked though - around the base of the tail is a classic feather pulling site
