Surfin
My planned WIR is now well underway. I have got most of the materials in hand now including 3 bales of Rapport that I will use in the nest boxes and on the concreted covered floor area. The land I will use is roughly triangular in shape of about 16 square metres and will require at least 2 internal support timbers on the longest side. I thought about putting some perches between these to add strength and stability. My question is how high should these be? Most of the run will be covered in clear corrugated roofing. Due to anticipated construction problems I have decided to leave about 5 sq. M covered in 1" X 1/2" welded mesh. Below this will be a slightly raised soil area, this will be bounded by bricks raised above the level of the soil to avoid it mixing with the Rapport. I was thinking of planting some comfrey and mixed greens here. Your comments would be most welcome. I can't get too stuck in yet until the weather calms down. It blew over my cement mixer last night. meezers
You're not planting the comfrey and greens inside the run are you ? It won't last two minutes I have several perches + 2 wooden chairs, a pallet on legs and 2 wooden platforms in my WIR. The highest perch is about 5', but it is above the pallet, so they have a 'step up' so to speak. The highest free standing perch is about 4'. They love their high perches, but they all have their favourites, some prefer to perch on the rungs under the chairs- 6 inches off the ground
Ain't Nobody Here
I have very high perches but they can get to them by various means (ie they don't have to fly up). They can jump down from one which is about 4 ft high but seem to prefer to take the stairs up . They all sleep on the highest possible perch! Have a look at my signature link if this makes no sense . Surfin
Maybe live plants wouldn't be a good idea.............Guess I'll have to make the 5 metres into an open air play area. Ian
