Help sex my Silkies.

Recommended Posts

I got 3 silkies about 4 months ago, the breeder was fairly sure he'd given me girls but at such a young age there were no guarantees. They must be about 6 months old now and none of them are either laying or crowing. Any ideas on the sex?

At the time they were all the same size but one quickly shot up bigger than the other two. They are all pretty quiet and timid but one of them is bigger than the other two. The smaller two look identical, are smaller and have no wattles wheras the other is larger with a bluer face and quiet large wattles. However he did say he had bantams and smaller minature silkies (bred with different stock so that may account for differences).

If you wouldn't mind taking a look at my flickr set and offering any advice or educated guesses it would be appreciated.

Here are the pics of the bigger cockerel?

Also, what are the white streaks/bits on his head? Is it were the feathers are growing or been pecked?

Fuuny, these photo's were taken a few weeks back and checking on them just now, the 'boy' now looks bouffant and the others look swept back?

Anyway, here are the pics of my other two. As said, they are both smaller and have no wattles or even much of a comb to speak of wheras the one above has plenty of both.

One last Q Silkie owners. I'm guessing at 6 months I should be finding out for sure pretty soon?

Thanks all,

Adam

I would say a boy and two girls as well. Got my silkies in July and two turned out to be boys, however we knew before they were six months. The breeder said that boys have a more upright carriage and often have a lower wing carriage and a less fluffy bum! One of my girls does have larger red wattles than the others but is laying - phew!

It was very obvious with one of the boys but I kept praying the other was a girl until he started crowing!
