Silkies with Buff Orp Bantams

Recommended Posts

I collected by Eglu Classic at the weekend and have narrowed down my choice of chickens to Silkies and Buff Orpington Bantams but cannot choose between them. Would it be ok to have a Buff Orpington Bantam in with 2 or 3 Silkies? Would there be enough room for them (they will probably only free range for an hour a day). I would hate the Silkies to be bullied. Any comments would be much appreciated to help me make up my mind. Thanks.

Both are placid birds so you shouldnt have a problem, orp bantams are quite big though so one of those and two Silkies would be ideal if they arent going to get out of the run much :D

When you go to buy do look for the ones nearest together in age which will reduce any initial problems

Also if you choose Silkies and one odd Orp try to get Silkies from a pen of quite a few as then they will not be closely bonded and so take exception to the Orp

Hey that's brilliant advice. I wouldn't have thought of that but will remember it for when I can expand my flock.

What I would say, Sankeys, is that Silkies can vary quite a lot in size so go for the biggest you can. I've got a lovely big black girly who is as gentle as could be and a tiny little white girly who is very much top chook.
