quality of eggs/health?

Recommended Posts

I don't really know how to title this post but I hope you can answer my questions. We've had our chickens now for about a month and one has been laying for a week. My 3 year old is the only one who has eaten the eggs due to the fact that we've only had one a day and it's still a novelty for him  He has eaten eggs before so I know he isn't allergic to eggs or doesn't have any problems with eggs.

On Saturday this week he was sick and has been complaining of a tummy ache for a few days and my parents and brother have put the frighteners up me now saying that it could be our eggs. I poo-poo'd this idea but it's got me worried. Our chickens were from a lady who runs a cattery so well looked after and I know they have been wormed too.

Could it be the eggs - are they all perfectly safe to eat straight from the chickens? Should I get the chickens vaccinated or something? Or is it just a bit of a bug he's picked up from nursery?

Thank you x

Its unlikely to be the eggs, there should be no problems with eating them from garden hens

Eggs laid by unvaccinated hens should be fine. There isnt anything you can do about vaccination now, it needs to be done within a few days of a chick hatching. If you have hybrid hens then chances are they have been vaccinated, pure breeds are usually not vaccinated but the eggs should still be fine

maybe its just a coincedence ? im a childrens nurse and we have seen alot a gastro upsets lately and norovirus is still about

That's what I though too. I "hope" so (well not that he's got a gastro upset!) because it would be awful if he was funny with our home grown eggs!

Thanks all x

Perhaps Mummy and Daddy should have the odd one, turn by turn.

We did tonight! We used them in our dinner - didn't exactly taste them but used 2 of them to coat our fish and then dunk in breadcrumbs!

LOVE the fact that my little boy can go to the nest box in the morning (depending on when they lay, has been before 8.30 previous 2 mornings) and have his egg cooked for breakfast :D

my 3yr old is the same he loves a fresh egg

ask alfie what he wants for breakfast and you get the same answer

"i want a blue and a green dippy egg "

hes far to posh for a brown egg lol

Beggars can't be choosers in this house as we've only got one pale brown egg at a time  Actually I don't think that any of our breeds lay green/blue eggs!
