I need a fence to keep my chooks off the patio by the back door, they are making so much mess that I have had an ultimatum from my husband!

They are ex-bads so never fly and if they get unb their very occationally it wouldn't matter. What I want is something not too heavy but can be easily put up really a smart looking wire type thing but I need a gate too.

Has anyone any ideas.

We've used some metal mesh panels from screwfix held together with omlet run clips to make a fence for our girls. It's light and easy to fold away when not needed and seems to do the trick. Despite being able to fly over it, they've only done so once - and that was to get to grapes!!

We got a local fencing company to make some trellis panels to fit across between our patio and garden. The gate is made from two panels apx 3' wide - each hinged on one side and with a thumb latch to join them. It would be easy to use one panel as a gate but we wanted a wide opening. Cost was similar to B&Q/Homebase but built to our sizes/spec and will last.

The panels attached quickly to some existing uprights plus one new fence post in a post spike. Didn't take long to put up at all.

It is apx 3' 6" high and raised a couple of inches off the ground, but they would have made the panels to any size to suit the batten spacing we asked for. Three of the hybrids regularly hop on top of the trellis but only one tries to come on to the patio (she has a baaaad mint habit!). I am growing a couple of the climbers along the trellis to dissuade the chooks and soften the panels (although they are not obtrusive as we had feared).

Since putting the trellis up we have got two bantams which can hop between the battens but they do no damage to the patio or plants and only tiddly poos so even with hindsight we wouldn't have got the spacing any smaller.

Hope this helps.
