quickcluck
Maisie is once again broody, I was really hoping she'd skip it this year as she got so poorly with it last year So she's back in the sin bin, with a feeder of corn and some water, but she's refusing to eat any of it Any helpers at all? She lost half her body weight last year, and as she's started so early this year, want to avoid it reoccuring.... Should I just let her out in the afternoon and offer her corn???? Help! Jools
I would harden my heart and keep her sinbinned if she's a persistent and problem broody. If she's determined not to eat corn, I'd give in and tempt her with something else - dried mealworms usually do the trick here. A good tonic in her water will help too - I use Lifeguard. A couple of mine keep thinking about sitting, so I keep booting them out before they get serious. It must be nearly spring!
Egluntyne
I'd definitely put her in a broody cage for a full 3 days and nights minimum, every time she shows signs of broodiness.
quickcluck
She's in there and grumbling. I did put her in the cube over night, as it was minus degrees, too cold to leave here out with no one to snuggle up to. I didn't think covering the cage would be warm enough..... Will tempt her with worms today. She was broody the whole summer last year

Roobaloo
I thought corn was bad as it's "heating"...and you need to lower a broody's body temp? I would stay firm...and as Jools suggests, add LifeGuard to her warm to add nutrition and tempt her with some mealworms (live ones if you can cope...she'll not be able to resist the wriggling!! )
quickcluck
Hmmmmmm good point about the corn! We've given her that as she loses weight so very quickly, we are trying to give her calories.....

Jools
Good point Roobaloo. What we buy as "corn" is often a mix of wheat and maize and sometimes some other goodies too like dried peas. If you can get straight wheat, that's fine for a broody, but not maize as that's what's best for warming them up.
