Marvellous to hear that the town had been awarded the prefix 'Royal' in recognition of their welcoming home of the fallen.

It's just up the road from me. I think the 'Royal' is very deserved - seems a bit weird to be happy about it though in a way given the circumstances I wonder how many local who want to sound posh will now say that they live near 'Royal Wootton Bassett' instead of Marlborough

As much as I applaud the community for what they do - I have personal ties with RAF Lyneham - which is closing as Wooton Bassett receives this honour.

 

All the servicemen and women have been repatriated through RAF Lyneham and I feel it is unjust to close it

It is a crying shame about RAF Lyneham (I have several family members in the RAF)

 

However, Royal Wooten Bassett deserves the accolade

I agree it is well deserved.

One of our ex students was killed in Afghanistan just over a year ago. He was 19.

The repatriation at Wooton Bassett gave his friends a focus for their grief and an opportunity to welcome him home, more so than the very formal military funeral with which he was (rightly) honoured later.

It is sad that RAF Lyneham is to close. I hope that wherever he repatriations move to, something similar might happen.
