Not laid for 5 days - should I worry ?

Recommended Posts

Its my third week of chicken owning & we've been very lucky with lots of eggs from both of mine from day one. They've not always laid every day but certainly every other day. One however has not laid for 5 days (and the last time was a small misshapen egg). Now I don't expect them to lay constantly but I wonder if I need to worry ?

Both hens look well (we don't know which is the non layer as not sussed who lays what yet) and are eating & drinking normally. Both are acting normal - nice & perky, chasing fllies, dustbathing etc.

So my intuition is to just go with the flow, but would love some reassurance that I shouldn't be rushing to the vet !!!

They're quite young and only just started laying, so it still goes a bit funny. Our bluebelle layed for a week, stopped (well, laiad 5 softies) for 2 weeks, now she's OK again. If you really wanted to, you could add some supplements to their water (e.g apple cider vinegar, or if it goes on for longer, liquid calcium)

I posted a similar problem last week about my Delilah, who had started laying, and then suddenly stopped for almost 2 weeks. Like yours she was absolutely fine in herself, no sign of anything wrong, eating well and cheeky as ever.

The day after I raised the issue on here asking for advice, madam started laying again, and is currently going at every other day again, her old pattern from before the 'egg holiday'.

General advice I was given was that if they seem well, happy, eating normally etc, then not to worry too much - sometimes they can have a bit of a blip early on in their laying life.
