Hi, am thinking about a walk in run with a cube, but would like to put the cube on a wooden base to make it higher for easier cleaning and to create space under to store feed etc. Can anyone tell me if the cube can be put together without attaching the legs please? Thanks!

yes I'm pretty sure you could, and we did think about it.

however, we decided to leave it on the base - although ours is outside the WIR - because it's better than with none iyswim.

surely if it's inside your WIR it will be high enough, and you can use the space underneath as you suggest?

I am inspired by some of the wir's on the forum, love the design of the classic, but want more than four hens! I really like the idea of having the cube outside the run but also need more room there for bales and feed so thought I could create more space if cube was higher and on a box with room inside for al the chicken stuff! Glad to hear this could be possible, now need my oh to draw up some plans! Thanks for replying!

Have you considered 2 eglu classics?! This is my master plan :D

Mmm yes, two classics - I am still considering this too! I love the idea of 'bunk beds' but will 8 hens be able to sort out who sleeps where? Will there be problems with who gets the top bunk? It's a worry! Plus I think the cube will give them a bit more room, I won't have to search two eglu's for eggs and cleaning will possibly be a little easier with the one cube - maybe? Can anyone tell me if cleaning one cube is better than cleaning two classics or vice versa?

Two classics is a great idea but a few people have found that the chooks all crowd in to one leaving the other as a lorified nest box

The cube without the wheel unit is a good idea, even better that you can order it like that so save money by not having the wheel unit :D (bear in mind though that re-sale value will be reduced)

Wow, thanks so much for your replies, my mind is made up now - I'm going for the cube without legs - had no idea I could get them without legs so that is brilliant news for me - I'm out to measure, clear the ground, lay some slabs and get my oh to design me something to fit. What a brilliant forum this is!

Oh the colour is my next dilemma! I am leaning towards orange I must admit!

Thanks for the photo - looks just as good without wheels underneath I think. Good idea about keeping the air circulating under the cube, I hadn't considered that, very good tip. I will incorporate this into the design.

Had a good survey of the area today - my oh is just about to rent some land to run his nursery on, so away with all the plant pots and plants, away with all the rubbish behind the greenhouse and in a few weeks I will be able to level the ground and put slabs down and start building!

New question for you all then - how high a platform could I put my cube onto and still comfortably reach inside for egg collection, cleaning etc? I can rig up a safe way for the chickens to get down from the cube and into the run so that won't be a problem, just could do with some advice on how big a storage space I could squeeze in underneath it. I could make the box as wide as the run - but how high should it be?
