Unwell chicken - help!

Recommended Posts

Hello,

One of my girls is just sitting in the nest looking sleepy, I don't know how long she has been there but the other hens have laid during the day. I can tell there is a problem! Under her the nest was very wet and so are her feathers at her rear. I have felt around her vent which is soft but I really don't know how to tell if she has an egg stuck?

I have given her some nutri-drops and put her back on a clean nest. She last laid an egg 4 days ago and has been more erratic and we are getting less eggs then usual in the last 2 weeks :anxious: . She tends to lay quite large eggs too. Had her since last May when she was point of lay...

anyone any suggestions???

Thanks

:anxious:

Hmmmmm  sounds like an egg could have broken whilst she was trying to lay it. If she hasn't passed the shell it will need to be removed (all of it). Hope that's not the case though as I've heard it can be a tricky job.

Somone with more expertise will be along soon I'm sure.

My Pigeon frequently has soft and broken eggs.

Usually Grackle (the midwife) helps her deliver the membrane/shell which terrifies me in case she pecks her bum so if I get there first I use a gloved finger and water to feel inside her and sweep round to remove all the broken shell and membrane. I hold her vertically to help all the egg drain out first.

It may not be broken though. I found with one of mine that had trouble laying she had loads of lubricant but you will find out if you feel inside her. Good luck.
