beach chick
anyone else's school have one? my girls' school - non-selective comprehensive - has a working farm on site, which is run by the staff with a lot of pupil involvement including our own Young Farmers Club. they've just introduced a new subject for Y7s called GO - Great Outdoors - which brings the farm into the educational system more clearly. for example: a maths project recently involved them weighing baby piglets at intervals to establish weight gain versus feed put in. In DT and design they came up with logos and packaging ideas for sausages. Art - animal drawing from life. etc etc - you get the picture! they rear pigs, cattle and lamb for slaughter - so the students learn about the management of the process, from selecting the bull semen from the AI catalogue to provide the required characteristics, to slaughter and hanging and packaging etc etc - and of course, an understanding of the circle of life. for students who want to do animal care as an option, they also have small animals - rabbits, guinea pigs etc, plus a fairly extensive collection of exotics - snakes, lizards, creepy crawlies. oh, and some chickens of course!!! yesterday we had Lambing Day - opened the farm to the public to show off the baby lambs and piglets etc, and managed to raise £7k for the school YFC!! I think it is the most fantastic resource for the school, and gives us so much good PR as well, so just wondered if any other omleteers were involved in anything like this? The Dogmother
Rosie's secondary school doesn't have one, but another school (just out of our area) has an award wining organic farm attached to it. They regularly have open days so that people can visit and see the animals.
Seagazer
Beach chick that isn't the school in Hythe is it? My brother's kids go to that school and it has a farm attached. We thought it a bit odd at the time but they seemed to enjoy it.

Goosey Lucy
Goosey Lucy - lovely link. I'm sure he will love it - having a farm on site just adds an extra dimension to school life! Thanks, Beach Chick. I think the children spend at least one full week a year based in the unit for their first few years before deciding whether to take their studies further. It's definitely a great idea as there is so much farming here.
