hi all,

yesterday my sussex red caught her Comb on the wire mesh, it blead out quite a bit. i wiped her down with some warm water and cotton wool and the bleeding stopped, but she now had a little chunk taken out of her comb at the back.

fistly she is fine and shows no real affects of what happened to her yesterday, but she now has alot of dryed blood at the top of her head that i cant remove as she wont let me!

secondly should i do anything?

i dont really know what to do? the cut itself isnt that bad.

please can someone offer any advice?

Dont have a comprehensive answer specific to Chickens, (only a beginner), Dried blood isn't a problem particularly. Its part of the scab formation that helps healing and keeps the injury clean.

Purple Spray (Gentian Violet) if you have some will also help with infection.

Keep an eye on the other girls, apparently they like the taste of blood and may peck at your poorly hen, if you notice any interest from the others keep her separate until the scab forms properly.

I am sure others will have some more informed replies.

I agree re the purple spray if you have any. Other than that I would leave it well alone as if the blood has nicely clotted, bathing it etc will only disturb the clot and get things bleeding again. Keep a daily check on it though just to make sure it looks clean and doesn't get swollen or infected looking.

Cut combs always bleed more than they need to, don't they?

Bathe it and assess the damage. A little pressure will usually stop the bleeding, as will a puff of Vet Wound Powder, which contains a blood staunching ingredient. Spray her with purple spray to disguise the colour of the blood and pop her back in with the others if it has stopped bleeding.
