Feeling very down today as our beloved Leni has had her second prolapse following the vet fixing yesterdays. She also had an egg released that didn't have a shell formed. She is on antibiotics in case of infection but the second prolapse is a set back.

 

I've called the vet who said that this is rare and that she will look into it and call me back.

 

What to do now? She's our lovely little hen pecked girlie that spends most of her time with us? I feel so sorry for us and helpless.

I sadly don't think it is rare for a hen to prolapse a second time once one has been reduced. It is often quite difficult to keep the prolapse in, they often push it back out again.

I agree, it is unlikely to stay in, especially if she lays every day and/or lays large eggs. It will inevitably pop out again when she next lays, it will either get pecked or infected somewhere along the line.

 

I'm afraid that it's rare for this situation to have a positive outcome

The vet has now rang back and they want to stitch it to help keep it in for a few days. It will need to be done under gas and will cost about £70. Should we go for this do you think?

If you do, you have to go into in knowing that she may well prolapse again at some point soon. I guess it also depends on your finances. There are some success stories though so it is not necessarily all doom and gloom

Thanks for your comments. She's always been a slow to lay lady and always had soft shells so maybe she has some sort of calcium deficiency that won't sort itself out?

It could be that she needs extra calcium, it could also be the case that she has a malfunctioning shell gland *shrugs*.

 

You could try her with a little limestone flour and cod liver oil in her feed and see if that makes any difference. TBH, if the eggshells are harder, it will only exacerbate the prolapse problem

If she has had laying issues before I would be tempted to call it a day. That is my personal point of view though if she were one of mine. Her outlook is not good all things given and the process will be stressful for her for perhaps little gain in the long run.

Thank you for all your posts. Its been a difficult day.

We took Leni back to the vet this evening and he agreed that the long term prognosis wasn't good and that she should be pts today. Plenty of tears. She's been a briliantly friendly pet - really part of the family. Not a nice thing to happen to her though.
