Chezza13
Hi I'm new on here and am looking for some advice. I have 4 beautiful Cochins which I have pretty much adopted where I work (village pub).recently we have had to rearrange the garden which only leaves the chickens a third of what they had which still a very large area but still they have been stressed (feather plucking, moping etc.) but one hen decided to become broody in the meantime now 3 days ago a cockerel and a hen where climbing all over her which resulted in lots of broken eggs so I had to move her to clean up then I realised she was walking funny at first I assumed she was a little stiff from so much rest as she is eating, drinking and making no fuss I thought was normal but yesterday she was still the same so we went to the vets this morning and he thinks it seems like a pelvic fracture which he said involves bed rest and some anti inflammatory/pain relief tablets he didn't really know what else to suggest so if anyone can give me some other advice whether it's giving her certain food etc. It would be most appreciated. I really hope she pulls through!
AnnieP
Oh, poor you! I have never heard of this, and I am sure someone will be along soon with some sound advice, but I would guess that keeping her quiet, maybe in a nice cardboard box, somewhere pretty warm would be the best thing, with small amounts of roaming time, without any of the others being around. If it is kept dark, she will happily roost for much of the time, as they do in the winter months when we have shorter days. I do hope she mends quickly. Egluntyne
I agree that keeping her off her feet for a few days, in a pet carrier or similar is a good idea, other wise the general hurly burly and trying to keep up with the others will exacerbate the injury. Keep her drinking. She may be off her grub or a day or two if she is in pain, so I'd coax her with anything she fancies.
Chezza13
Thanks guys,I have separated her into a a small 4 by 4 coop as she is rather large and a 3ft little space outside so she can look out the door.food seems to be going down well at the mo so hopefully she will build some strength.bless her she is so laid back and placid, she's not once made a fuss yet. Chezza13
Had an awful day today! Athena my other hen who has recently plucked a large area on her back was brutally mated by one of my cockerels when I found her she is really cut on back and under wings I managed to get her in the coop and treated her with antiseptic spray and gave her one of madusas(the other hen) pain relief tablets And sat with her for 6 hours hand feeding/ drinking her she is calm now and resting in the other coop with her mum (madusa). I have now made a separate run for the 2 girls to keep away from Hercules and Ricardo (my 2 cockerels). Can anyone tell me if I can buy an antibiotic spray anywhere and any other advice would be great. Can't believe what has happend over the last few days! : (
Plum
Veterinary powder from any pet shop may keep it clean. Sounds like you need some more girls to keep the boys occupied.
Chezza13
Thanks. Yeah that was the plan my girls get so broody so was hoping for some new chicks in the next 2 months But can't see that happening in the near future, seriously debating giving Ricardo away once the girls are better as he is so feisty with them but will keep him until there better so hercules has some company. Chezza13
Madusa is doing so much better today she came out for 20mins in her now 6th run she was steady on her feet and only waddling slightly she was having a good shake and stretch and was scratching in mud looking for stuff to peck at! I think having Athena as company has helped and she is trying to help her recover : )
