jippy1
Hi Our 4 lovely chickens arrived Saturday ex bats seem ok and very friendly ,, they seem to have problems eating layers pellets , they have had their beaks trimmed I think it looks like it ,, So today I have ground up the pellets into a chuncky powder and they seem to be eating it better , will check the bowl later. Any advise pleased as I know have another thing to worry about hungry chucks LOL along with the rest of the family. Thanks
Tweety
Hi, Exbatts have only ever been fed layers mash, and will not recognise the pellets as their food. Ideally, you should get a bag of mash to feed them and slowly start adding the pellets to it, until they get the hang of it. Good luck with you new hens, and well done for giving a lovely home to some deserving girls!
jippy1
Hi I should of bought the mash but bought big bag of layers pellets from omlet with their new home a lovely green cube, so I cant really waste a bag so will grind it up and gradually make the chunks bigger ,do you think that will work, I told OH chickens were easy to look after LOL ... Patricia W
I'm sure it will. But if I were you,I'd take the easy option and buy a 5kg mash and gradually add the pellets to it over about 3 -4 weeks till they are on pellets. Your bag of layers will keep that long. I'm surprised the rescue didn't advise you to get mash. The one I use in Brackley always has it for sale when you pick them up.
Sammiboo
I agree with what has been said. Get the ex batt crumb and slowly inroduce the pellets. My ex batts are on crumb and they won't touch the pellets that the other girls eat
