Fran A
Could anyone please tell me if the cream legbar is a smaller breed of chicken or a larger one? I have 4 Poland girls and 2 miniature Light Sussex hybrid girls whom all get along great. The Polands were here first and a few weeks ago I introduced the two Sussex girlies without major issue. The Polands are definitely the bosses but are not malicious with the newbies and everyone lives together harmoniously. Actually, I was surprised how well the introductions went, I was expecting flying feathers!! I fancy a couple more chickens to complete my family and the blue eggs layed by cream legbars appeal to me Any help gratefully received.....thank you
Ain't Nobody Here
I have a Columbine which is a Cream Legbar hybrid - she's just normal sized and laid green eggs (she's nearly 4 so isn't laying any more ). Bear in mind that there's no absolute guarantee of blue eggs!
Fran A
No I know there is no guarantee that the eggs will be blue/green but I want another couple of chickens anyhow because I love them and they are all my babies, so I was looking through different breeds and I heard about these. So they are large chickens then???
Space Chick
I would describe a Cream Legbar as a lighter large fowl, they aren't a heavy breed, and in my experience whilst flighty are very friendly and docile birds. If the breeding is right, a cream legbar will lay a sky blue egg, although some will lay more of a green egg. If it is a pure breed it won't lay a brown or cream egg, however if it's a Cream legbar based hybrid like a columbine it does stand a chance of laying a bog standard egg I would recommend one in your flock, although if you would rather bantam sized birds, the Araucana comes in a bantam size, and should lay a green egg (although bantams don't always breed true to the large fowl equivalents) Hope this helps. Fran A
Thank you Space Chick, that was really helpful! That was just the information I was after. The ones I am interested in are indeed pure breeds but I was concerned about size difference as I have a happy flock here and would like that to continue. I realise there may be issues introducing any new birds to an existing flock but I would prefer to bring newbies in that are at least a similar size to my existing girls irrespective of egg colour
JillM
My Cream legbars are just a little smaller than the pepperpots and gingernut rangers - and although a literal pecking order took a little time to become establshed they all get on great and it's only been a couple of months! AmberSky
I have 2 as well and they are about the same size as a standard goldline/ranger chicken. They both have slightly different coloring and one lays a baby blue egg and the other a olve green egg!
cooker
I really want a cream legbar or two... can anyone recommend any breeders in the bristol area that we could get this breed from? Thanks Rachel
JillM
I got mine from Wernlas and had them delivered - beautiful girls
Space Chick
My cream legbar is from Wernlas, worth the trek, for show purposes shes too brown in colouring, but wernlas breed for the egg colour, so you'd get a perfect sky blue egg, but not a show quality bird. Mine is an angel, and I think think she's beautiful (in fact she's my favourite girl... Shhh don't tell the others )
Sam
How much are they from Wernlas if you don't mind me asking? They don't have prices on their site.
JillM
That depends on what age you want your bird to be. They sell hatchling eggs (£2.30 each I think), and chicks from a day old upwards. Give Sue a ring, she's very helpful!
Sam
I'm not planning on buying any yet, but when I get my cube ( one day ) They're on my wish list I want nice so it's good to know they breed for eggs Thank you
Benaberry
i adore my Cream Legbar, Delilah, even if she is completely mental, and responsible for us having to turn the end of our garden into chicken Alcatraz (didn't matter how secure we thought things were, every time i went outside i'd find her sunning herself on the lawn, with her run mates all looking rather confused and jealous!). Beautiful as well - the best Sunday morning boiled eggs She's definitely the smallest of my girls apart from the two young Silkies, Bluebell, our blue hybrid, is a fair bit bigger than her, and the Orps just dwarf everything else. If it makes sense, she's the only one i can pick up and carry easily with one hand under her tummy, with fingers and thumb holding wings on each side if I need to open the run door with the other hand. Not sure if it's because she's the only one left of our original four that I had from really young (the others we have now were all a bit older when we got them) so she's been handled more, but she's definitely the tamest, comes running to the front of the run squawking as soon as you head up the garden towards them, and will quite contendedly lay in your arms for a cuddle. She is a scatty, nutty, crazy chook, but so much character - don't tell the others, but I think she is my favourite; I'd definitely have another Legbar in future flocks
Fran A
The breed does sound adorable!! All my current girls are friendly and any future hens will have a real job on beating the tameness and quirkiness of the Polands! If the Polands want picking up for a cuddle or to sit on your knee, they peck at your feet until they get what they want. Small birds but with massive characters!! I really do fancy a couple of cream legbars but it does sound like they will be bigger than my existing girls. I have found someone locally who breeds them, so I shall give her a ring and ask her advice too. Thank you for all your help, I'm getting rather excited here One more question, if i may. The hybrid breed - Columbine, are they larger than cream legbar or similar in size???
Ain't Nobody Here
I can vouch for the craziness of Columbines . Maisie nearly had me thwarted in her escape attempts (but I won ). She's one of my favourites . Don't know if this will help you guage the size?
Fran A
Awww, isn't she gorgeous???!!! Well, I have spoken to the lady who breeds the Cream Legbars and she will have some ready to go in a couple of weeks time. She keeps Sussex bantams together with the cream legbars and feels that they will probably be an ok addition to my existing flock. So I have reserved a couple!!!! The wait now begins until they are ready to come home, soooooo excited here

Benaberry
fantastic news - enjoy them Delilah is most disgruntled now that chicken Alcatraz means she can't swing on the washing line anymore...
Space Chick
My columbines are larger (slightly) than my CLB
