JillM Posted May 4, 2011 Share Posted May 4, 2011 Hi, I was prepared to wait an extra few days or so as my broody is so inexperienced (so am I!), and I feared the eggs may have become too cold when she was stretching her legs... But when I candled last night only 1 of the 8 was clear, and I saw movement in another egg. Today at least two eggs are cheeping, but no sign of pipping yet. My cookie has sat for 23 days plus and has now got 2 chicks, I didn't hear any noise from the eggs and nearly gave up so can't help really. It's interesting to look through the recent posts in this section of the forum. In the last week to 10 days, most people posting seem to have experienced longer than 'normal' times to hatch. Usually the chicks pop out at 21 days, sometimes a day or so earlier for Bantams. However, quite a number of people have reported 23 or even 24 days just recently, even for the smaller breeds, so you may have to hang on in their. Well I know I have two chicks anyway because I have the eggshells to prove it, but Mum is keeping them cosy and warm so I only got a very quck look when one peeked out from under Esme. Mum will often eat discarded egg shells (good protein and calcium boost), so don't rely 100% on empty shells to know how many chicks you have. To be honest the garden just looks nicely full with the crowd of girls I've got now, although there is still quite a bit of length left to go in my Omlet netting - and room to extend it over the area of garden just dying down.
