Scaley Leg Mite

Recommended Posts

I've just finished rubbing vaseline into 2 pairs of scabby chicken legs. The trouble is they are pekin bantams with fluffy feet and it was really hard to get the vaseline all over properly (the chickens were not co-operative either!). Now i've read that Johnsons anti mite spray can be used and surgical spirits (should have looked at the forum before I started  ). So what order should I do this in? - wash the vaseline off and then dunk their feet in the surgical spirits and then use Johnsons anti mite spray? Do I then need to put more vaseline on again?

The vaseline approach isn't the best solution, it's supposed to work by smothering the beasties but that's hard to do on feather-legged breeds.

My favourite cure is Eprinex (i know, i know, not licensed for poultry - just recommended by the PCGB's own vet). It "delivers highly effective internal and external parasite control in one application." It's used for dairy cows with no milk withdrawal so, as my vet says, it's bloomin' safe. The dose rate is 1 mL/10 kg (when you work that done to pekin size you are talking about one drop probably).

Your problem may be in getting it - my vet is fine but others have been turned down. Still others have invented a family dairy cow that needs treating!

Johnson's Anti Mite spray is another option - Active Ingredient: Permethrin 25/75 0.5%w/w. *this product is not licensed for use on poultry in the UK, but many vets recommend using it - you will need to withdraw the eggs from human consumption for 7 days after use*. Permethrin is the stuff used in mite powder too, so insecticidal, but deadly to cats, so do watch out. Some folks have had more mixed outcomes on Johnson's. it kills on contact but doesn't enter the bloodstream in the same way as Eprinex so needs to be resprayed.

Net Tex makes something too, and their products are quite good.

Good Luck!

tbh, Claret, I was quoting you from the Cotswold Chickens website in some of that!

Eprinex is really magic stuff though, we're using it particularly regularly on the Malay monsters in their wooden house to manage or prevent the dreaded red mite and so far, so good (touch the proverbial!)

Dont use surgical spirit its hugely painful for the chook apparently

Id use the Johnsons spray (not licenced for use on poultry but very good) and then follow up with a couple of treatments with Sudocreme which contains Benzyl Benzoate which will help and well as be soothing

Eprinex is good but isnt as cheap (short term) or as quickly available

Thanks everyone, your advice was really helpful.

I have used Johnsons anti mite spray and her feet are looking better - all the granular crusts are going and I can clearly see all her raised leg scales. I can tell it is feeling better for her as well as she happily let me rub sudocreme into her feet last night. She had been going nuts the night before when I tried to touch her feet.

Quick question - will her leg scales flatten back down now if all the mites have gone?
