Very noisy chicken!

Recommended Posts

Well, after the sad loss of Tilly earlier this week we went out today and got two new girls to keep remaining chook Grace company. And what thanks do we get ?? She (Grace) has screamed and squawked incessantly ever since the new girls arrived. They are pretty much ignoring her posturing and fluffing, but I don't think the neighbours will be so understanding

Last time we introduced a newbie to Grace she beat her up, but at least it was quiet, and we separated them for a while.

Any suggestions PLEASE?

You could add some things to the run to keep her occupied and distracted. :?

Hang up CDs, or corn & veggies for them to peck at she may be more interested in them than making a noise :D

I hung up some spinach for my chooks today when they were causing a commotion & it soon shut them up!:lol:

When Stella arrived the others did pick on her badly. But one of my Gingernuts took to making a loud bawking noise as a protest and occasionally the other one would join in. This noise started up when I went into the garden but stopped soon after I came inside. So I assumed she was making a racket to get my attention just like children do.... It was a very noisy, and I did worry what the neighbours might think. But after a few days she stopped doing it. Not sure if that's similar to what yours are doing.

well she kept up the racket till 9pm when she finally gave in and joined the new babies in the eglu.

She started again at 6.15 and has squawked intermittently since then.

She is quiet for now, but has been pecking the new girls, though somehow this seems better and more natural.

It is so stressful, I feel sorry for all of them right now, and just hope they settle soon, before the complaints start coming from the neighbours!:oops:

Thanks for your input, I'll keep posted!

Oh good luck for today. I had an awful time introducing my two new girls. Its so horrid to see the hen you love turn into an absolute monster isn't it?I ended up having to seperate the bully for the other two to feel secure in thier new surroundings and fit bumper bits to her to stop her from inflicting more damage. It DOES stop, and if you can bear it, its better to get it over and done with.. Obviously just make sure there is no blood or broken skin involved, as then you would need to step in.

Fingers crossed for you today! :D

My Speckledy can be very noisy when she wants something - but I've learnt that if she doesn't shut up, there's usually a good reason for it, like they've run out of water.

This morning, she's been squawking non-stop. I knew it was because she wanted to get out of the run (it's raining, so I wanted to keep them in to prevent them making the lawn even more of a quagmire than it already is), but I didn't twig the reason she wanted out. The thing is, our other hen is broody again, and I had seen no eggs from Migsy (the non-broody) for about a week. I tried turfing Angelica (the broody) off the nestbox, thinking that Migsy just wanted some company, but she still wasn't happy. So I opened the eglu door and Migsy went straight inside, with Angelica hot on her heels. There was the sound of an unladylike scuffle from inside the eglu, and when I opened the eggport, Angelica was on the nest, leaving poor Migsy perched on the edge!

Finally it dawned on me that Migsy wanted out so she could lay in comfort. Another search of the flowerbeds turned up a clutch of three eggs - I'm going to have another look round when it stops raining! Needless to say, all is now peaceful - for a while, at least...
