Sick Hen...

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm going to call the vet's when they open but wondered in the meantime if anybody has any advice...

One of my ex-batts is poorly (I've had them since February). She was fine yesterday morning but in the evening when I was cleaning out the house and they were running around the garden I noticed that one of them was standing still and with her eyes closed. She would walk around the garden for a bit, then stop and close her eyes. As soon as I'd finished cleaning the eglu she went inside (the others went into the run to eat).

I've just looked out the window and there's no sign of her in the run yet - the others are out but not her.

Any ideas what standing around with eyes closed might mean?

thanks.

J.

Good idea to speak to the vet.

Any one of a number of things could be causing the symptoms. She could have an infection, a problem with laying (maybe a soft egg is on its way), worms.

I'd bring her indoors and keep her warm and calm in a cardboard box if she seems very poorly, until you can get her to the vet.

Hi. My Kate was doing the same thing so I put her on her own away from the others so I could monitor her more closely. I then got hold of her and had a good look at her. Her feathers are matted under her wings. No sign of lice. She has since perked up massively. Whether she has been fighting something off I don't know. But I will have to sort her feathers out. It's worth giving her an up close and personal examination cos I hadnt noticed kates feathers until I looked under her wings. Hope she is ok.

Maybe she was just tired????
 Not convinced myself. If she is a regular layer and has not produced anything for 48 hours, there could be a soft shelled egg on the way. Her behaviour sounds like there is something not quite right. Hens don't usually start to reveal that they are under the weather until things get too much for them to cope with and this is usually quite late into illness. If she is still looking a little odd and has not produced an egg within the next 24 hours, I would pop her along to the vet. Of course have a good look for swellings, discharge, listen to her breathing and check for lice in the meantime. :D
