what can I do second time round.

Recommended Posts

Hi

Not been on here for a while.

I lost my chooks before christmas to mr foxy and I am now thinking about getting some more.obviously I am wary about foxes returning and just wondered if anyone has any suggestions for fox proofing.I appreciate they will get in if they really wanted but at least I can do whatever I can to avoid it.

we never had any problems before and I had never seen any foxes around(we live in town on a busy road) but someone has said that they do return to known feeding areas.our very large back garden is very secure(6ft fencing) and backs onto the garden of another house, the chooks had a run/coop/free range area fenced off at the end of the garden sheltered by a large tree.my partner was thinking of framing and roofing/meshing the whole area overhead but i'm not sure if this will make any difference.any advice would be appreciated.

If we do get new chooks we will be getting a new plastic hen house from Solway which hopefully make it a bit harder for any foxes to get in.

a walk in run with at least 16 guage weld mesh, either concrete slabs round the outside or bury some of the weld mesh to prevent any attempts at digging under the run and obviously a roof.

I agree with Poet, this is similar to what I have, and regularly (at least twice a week) we get a visit from a fox hoping that we have left a door open or something  . My girls are only allowed to FR with supervision too, especially at this time of year when they have cubs to feed and in the winter when food is scarce. Foxes are ever the opportunists  .

We have made a walk in run with weld mesh and its fitted on railway sleepers which run all the way around. This is to stop them digging, apparently they can dig straight under a fence but cannot dig down, continue digging straight and then come up. We have a roof but we are putting corrugated plastic on it at some point in the next week for added security.

this is a photo of what my WIR sits on the weld mesh is concreted in between the foundations and the breeze block hope this gives you an idea and a lot of security
