feeding chicks veg

Recommended Posts

I've been reading up on that today as my chicks are a week old now. :) I have been giving them chopped up live meal worms for the last 2 days but only once or twice a day to avoid runny poos (literally a piece each) they go mad for them. From what I can gather they need to stay on chick crumbs until 5/6 weeks old then onto growers pellets. Not sure how long that is for yet but I'm sure someone will say - there is a lot of good advice in the Hatching & Rearing section of the forem. I did read that you can give them the odd green treat at a few weeks of age, but if you do you need to give them some chick grit (smaller than the normal poultry grit).

I'll be checking back here to find out what other advice you get! Good Luck with your chicks :D

Glad you asked this snowberry, I am also wondering about this, when Bibble takes her chicks out into their run they'll be on earth with a few weeds & a tiny patch of grass. I presume they'll peck at the green things anyway, there's also a patch of sand in one corner (incase mum wants a roll) I presumed the sand would do as grit for the chicks. Chick grit is something I havent seen at the suppliers, but if its vital I'll search harder.

Oh my! I gave the 4 week old chicks sweetcorn tonight; I cooked frozen and let it cool. I wish I had a camera going to show you their reaction. They all started to peck at the bowl & then went mad when they got a piece of corn....jumping over each others backs to get away to a corner....or just running around in the cage with it in their mouths....not knowing what to do with the 'find'. That's why I love chickies, they're sooo funny! :D
