Hi,

 

We have read mixed independant reviews on the cube. A lot of people have said the cube isn't big enough and that hens like a perch to sleep on. It is a bit worrying because we have 6 hens in ours and they don't seem to like the plastic grilles that they need to sleep on. We got them from a farm where they slept on a perch.

We have read reviews that suggest they need to be on a perch hi off the ground so they feel safe and so they don't get covered in there own waste.

 

They use the Cube fine during the day for nesting but when it gets dark they all sleep on the Cube roof rather than going inside. We then have to pick them up and put them in.

 

Has anyone made any modifications to your cube? Please put me at ease and tell me how good the cube is.

Obviously i want my hens to be as happy as possible.

 

Oh and why do my hens still insist on sleeping on the Cube roof rather than going inside?

It sounds like they just need to get used to a different way of living. I have three cubes and all of my girls go to bed quite happily in them. I'm sure that my girls would be a bit confused if they suddenly had to get up onto single high perches as they are used to the bars.

 

I guess like any product there are some people who like them and some who don't. I like my car for example (citroen nemo) but other might say it was boxy and not fast enough. It's down to personal preference. I personally wouldn't have a problem with popping them into the house - I'd be out collecting feeders and closing the door anyway.

I'm sure your chickens will soon get the hang of sleeping inside the Cube, they're creatures of habit and just need to learn a new one. The fact that they have to climb a ladder to get to bed should be enough to satisfy their roosting somewhere high instincts. The idea of the roosting bars is that their droppings fall through. I think someone has replaced them with perches and if that's what yours were used to, it might be worth trying.

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately the 28 day return policy expired two days ago. I think i'm simply not giving it enough time.

I would but the hens are owned by my mum and dad and they paid for the cube. My dad keeps changing his mind but i think has decided to give it time.

 

I'm going to look in to putting a perch in there
