strange behavior = broody?

Recommended Posts

Came home this afternoon to find Josie sitting in the nest. Figured she was laying but then remembered that she laid yesterday and I found her sitting on Korma's egg (quite a sight as Josie's eggs are 34g and Korma's are 64g).

Kicked her out and since then she has been running from eglu to eglu trying to decide if she's going in or out and when she's not doing that she's running around the outside of the WIR and back of the eglu's looking like she's lost something.

Can't believe she's actually broody as she's a total "Ooops, word censored!" of a chicken....I'm convinced she would eat her own given half the chance!

It's possible she may be starting to become broody. They tend to make a very distinctive noise when they are starting, and flatten themselves out like a feathery pancake on the nest. They also object strongly to being removed from the nest.

There is excellent advice on dealing with broody hens on the forum, and the broody cage for 3 days (and nights) is, in my experience, the quickest and most reliable way of dealing with the problem.Having said that, my blue laced Wyandotte is now on her 5th day in the sin bin, and shows no sign of snapping out of it! There's always one!

It does sound like she could be going broody.

I'd put her in the run and shut the eglus after everyone has finished laying so she has nowhere to sit. You may need to put her in a wire dog crate so snap her out of it if that doesn't work :)
